Muktananda

Below is an excerpt from an article by Swami Muktananda. I think this piece of wisdom is an excellent explanation of how “We are ALL people.” Although the article’s purpose is to enumerate the qualities of the Guru, the quality mentioned in the excerpt below is very inline with my personal discovery of the Truth.

Nishtha is identification. First we identify ourselves with a particular sex, “I am a man” or “I am a woman.” Then there is jati-nishtha, or identification with a caste: “I am a brahmin” (priest) or “I am a kshatriya” (warrior). Then we have identification with race: “I am black” or “I am white.” Then we have identification with country, or linga-nishta: “I am Indian” or “I am American.” A brahmanishtha is one  in whose case all these false identifications have dissolved and whose only identification is with his innermost Self. He knows, “I am Brahman; I am the Highest Truth.” After perceiving the Truth, one who perceives the true Reality and begins to live constantly in that Truth is brahmanishtha. It is not identification with the body; it is not identification with a caste, race, country, or political party. It is not any of these silly identifications. Brahmanishtha is identification with the Supreme.
